Is hosting profitable?

With tons of hosting companies out there and many more starting up all the time, is it even profitable? Those who run hosting companies, how many clients and how much money do you actually make after covering expenses?

Yeah, if you "do it right" almost anything can be profitable. But on average is it? Some hosts today offer so much for so little (like the one I host with that costs $20 per year for 100MB of 5GB of bandwidth) that it seems like you'd need to sell hundreds if not thousands of accounts for it to provide a full-time income.

I have no experience, but these are my thoughts. It shouldn't be that hard to turn a profit in hosting...but...I would think it would be hard to earn minimum wage's worth of profit for all the time it will take up.

That being said, it has more potential to earn profit than flipping burgers, and probably more engaging work.

Many hosts have lasted a long time and have made good profits.. you have to be very good in this market to last long. Too much competition first off.

most small hosting services have very little, kind of like some small computer shops, barely making enough.

yes, i agree with the rest, assuming you do it all right, you should be able to make a profit. this begins once you own your own datacenter, and have about 2-3 full tim support technichians :biggrin2: j/k

Well the larger a host firm gets, the more staff it needs. Ranging from an attorney if there are legal problems, to more tech crew, to greater amounts of servers.

If the host can cover these costs as they get larger, and they have a stable pricing plan to do so that helps increase cash revenues, yet attract customers the business will be successful.

I imagine a hosting company could always turn a profit, because clients are always looking for different features in a webhost...I believe the industry that is no longer too profitable is that of the web designer, seeing as everyone and their uncle is a web designer these days.

Well anybody can be a web-designer.. it is just the good ones that make cash. ;)

Even the good ones have trouble competing and finding clients. :(

Exactly. I have a friend who is an amazing designer, and not just by my crappy standards of what a good designer is. But he's having such a hard time finding clients now, everyone designs shit these days.

I'll have to agree.. advertising has become a tight market.

Also that sig is quite insulting. Why did you blatantly rip off mine and then mock it? Shall I change mine if you find it wrong? I don't want to infringe on anybody.

Huh?

All leopards have spots, you don't see one leopard changing his fur because he sees another leopard with the same spots.

As far as for the topic, Hosting is profitable if you are a smart and good person. If you invest into the right equipment, people, software and dedicate the time you need to the company, but always taking breaks so you don't burn yourself out.

Profit it determined by the people you market.

I work for a company that seems to have whooped up the popularity. The admin just bought domains for all the active staff members, around 5 or 6. That's the cost, out of his pocket. of one of his hosting accounts, and that's if it's at a cheaper place. If you're generous and have awesome support, and also good stress control, you can do well. Stress and burnout is a big issue IMO though...so yeah, breaks are good :classic2:
Don't try and oversell, it hurts your servers, then your customers, and no matter what anyone says, hosting ads travels by word-of-mouth or on forums best, so hurt customers hurt business, big time. RCTHost has recently got some bad press for faulty servers, and wham...down goes their popularity. Watch and learn, and you might turn a profit :classic2:
