If I want to put a message board on my own website is it worth learning to design one? Is this hard? Or should I use a download? Any suggestions for good free ones? Any approximations as to how much space these take up so I have an idea for web hosting?
hi. Yes, it would be worth yor time to download one. My suggestion is invisionboard. It takes about 10mb space for a small board, a bit more as size and # posts/members increase.
Don't bother trying a perl/flatfile database board like Ikonboard or Yabb. Free and Paid hosts alike have banned them because they hog resources big time. The PHP/MySQL varieties listed above are far better, and with GZIP compression, they use very little bandwidth (in comparison). As for space, I think 50 MB space and 5 GB/month bandwidth should be good for a medium sized board. Some hosts (like http://www.myacen.com) will allow you to upgrade your hosting whenever you want, and you just pay the difference between the plans. That way, if you pay for a year for Package 2, and after 6 months you are pushing the bandwidth limit, you can upgrade to Package 3, and you just pay the difference between the plans for the remaining 6 months.
just like what Canuckkev recommended, these forums are free and what's more it be can customized with MODs and HAcks that are created by users. and it's in no way less comparable to those licensed/paying boards
