Sex @ 12 Ok!

Well...round here the age is 14. But, it's not like all that many people are having intercourse at 14, it's all about oral sex!

Since when do kids obey the sex laws anyway? This law doesn't change anything. If they want to have sex, they're going to have sex. I hate to seem cynical, but that's how it is. In Canada, the age of consent is 14, and it hasn't been much of a problem, as far as pregnancy goes. Here, as I'm sure they'll do out there, is, lower the age, but improve the awareness of contraception and diseases and pregnancy. They used to try and scare everyone off from having sex, and that was the education, but it's slowly getting better.

Actually, I think it's only in Alberta that it's 14, not all of Canada.

While the law probably won't prevent anyone (in the plural sense) from having sex, it does somewhat send a message that it's legal at that age, so why shouldn't they?

I don't really know what the "solution" would be, but if anything, I think 12 is a little too young to be having sex. I can't remember when puberty is for most people...but hell, probably some kids don't have pubes by age 12!

I think some people had a little difficulty understanding the reasoning behind the law. The way I understand it is:

1. Underage teens ( 12 - 15 ) are having sex with kids their own age!
2. There was an exisiting law against this that most police officers ignored. Who is going to take a 12 year old kid to jail for having sex with another 12 yo?
3. The law came into existence because it was pointless to try to prosecute these 12 -15 yo children and no one was arresting them anyways...
4. There are HARDER penalties for having sex with underage (<16 yo) children now if you are above 16yo and not within 2 years of your partners age. I guess an 18yo can have a 16yo, a 17yo can have a 16yo but not a 15yo... maybe... I don't know. :p

Correct me if I am wrong on any of these points.

P.S.: I experimented with sex when I was 7 or 8 years old. I mean I attempted to have actual intercourse at that age. If you are not taught about sex properly (i.e. strong religious backgrounds) or you are taught in the wrong way (i.e. porn) then you have a larger chance of getting involved in sexual relations at a younger age.

What a lot people don't realize is that sex is very natural and it feels good. Why wouldn't a percentage of children try it out? This is where sex ed comes into play but I'm rambling now.

16yo for girls here and none for boys. So if the boys have sex with a 16yo girl+ he probably won't be jailed. And girls won't be jailed for that. Recently a 11 year old girl got pregnant here.

Er, and same here tandoc. Boys school.

That's simply insane. I guess I'm old fashioned when it comes to this topic but 12?! I certainly hope they tossed something in requiring parents from both dependents to approve and for birth control to be mandatory if they want the laws protection. Even then though, 12?

Bottom line is if you can't raise a kid (emotionally, financially, stable environment, drug free, etc.) then you shouldn't be allowed to have sex without safe guards in place. That's my feeling even if over eighteen but there is no way you can legislate mistakes/lapses in judgment/or outright stupidity.

Toss in the young age and you're just begging for higher STD's, more unwanted pregnancies, a higher number of problems with the next generation, and a parent who is emotionally unprepared to handle the consequences of their actions. Unreal that this came from adults whom are assumably well educated.

They are gonna ---- anyways, so they lowered the law. Simple, why not?

Hell, in the US where i live, 16 is the age of consent, i know a lot of people that had sex way before that time.

What if someone reaches 18?

does the other person have to be 18 too or the consent age is enough to avoid "child/minor something" charges? heh

I dont see why someone should be punished for something they CHOOSE to do. Its the same as jailing people for listening to music.

Although...12 seems a little young. Id say make it 14.

That is actually a decent way to put it because at the age of 12 you really don't have the maturity to consent. That's of course my own opinion.

Bottom line is the police don't set up sting operations for under age sex, they don't enter private residences to see if you are breaking the law, and pretty much only act if the woman becomes pregnant and one of the parents complains.

That's why I think it's logical to make the parents give permission and to make sure safe guards are in place. If you want the laws protection then you have to discuss it with your parents and there has to be safe guards to prevent pregnancy.

Will it stop sex at 12? Of course not, but if there are two young kids that think they are in love and want an ongoing sexual relationship they can legally have it with parental consent and safe guards in place. For everyone else the law is just another piece of paper and as long as you aren't putting on public shows for the world to see it won't impact you.

"Mommy, is it OK for me to have sex with my girl tomorrow night?"

They both want to do it? Hey, we all (or at least most of us) believe in freedom, so why should we limit the freedom on these 12 year old kids? They aren't affecting anyone else with their actions, are they?

DAMN RIGHT THEY ARE. It doesn't matter the age, I don't want my tax money going to "families" that are too poor to raise their own damn kids. I don't want my money paying for them to have sex because they know if a pregnancy develops, the government will support them. I also don't want my tax money paying someone elses medical bills because they were a had unproctected sex countless times and ended up with a shitload of STD's.

And I agree with what Todd said about not being mature enough at 12 to give sexual consent. I remember being 12. Hell, back then I was still "discovering" my body. Not only that, I was growing emotionally. I couldn't have possibly understood the benefits and consequences of a physical relationship, and I doubt any 12 year old could.

It's a growing problem in our society. Kids are being exposed to sex at such a young age, it only seems natural to do it themselves. But despite kids hitting puberty faster, lots of times it seems their bodies/minds aren't ready for sex when it happens.

If I had a 12 year old daughter and I caught her having sex, she would be the first nun in the family.

So all you 13 year old boys need to listen up. Sex isn't a toy. When you get a girl pregnant, that's at the VERY LEAST an 18 YEAR commitment.

Honestly I believe in abstience. WHAT!?!?! Stay a virgin till marriage?!??! My friends will laugh at me. All I can say is
BOOO WHOO

This was on ER last nite,... this 12 y/o kid had a STI, and gave it to his year 5 classmates
