What do you call these ads?

I've seen an increase of "floating" advertisements on webpages, and I must say that they are by far the most annoying yet. On ESPN, for example, I sometimes see this car moving across the screen while I'm trying to read the box scores. They usually come complete with sound effects. I must say that these are the most annoying types of ads -- worse than pop-ups -- and I would like to know what they are called and if there are any methods by which these ads can be removed?

They are called Overlay Flash Ads.

I just call em flash ads. :biggrin2:
They dont annoy me that much because its not a seperate page, but I close it right away. If I wanted to advertise something on espn I'd do the same thing because banners take up room for the website, and everybody has pop-up blockers already. But, I think they should lay off with the sound effects. Save that for the virtual tour of the car.

Yes, any website with sound effects...I hate. I think they are effective advertising though...they grab your attention every time.

Flash website with sound effects
$50/hour

Advertising your contest with flash ads/sound effects on ESPN
Lots o' money :D

Having the pleasure of knowing it'll annoy the heck out of people like conker
....Priceless

Is lookin at an ad too much to ask :classic2:
You can always close the overlay flash ad or disable the play option.
What really would be annoying is if you see a flash advertisement for porno.

You mean Shoshkeles?

Yes, they can be annoying at times, and even trying to remember how to spell the name is a real pain.

Shoshkeles isnt the name of the type of ads. More like a company that produces them. Eyeblaster does too.

j/k. the name's shoshkeles. :biggrin2:
I just felt like posting stuff. I read about shoshkeles a while ago here but then forgot all about it because of the stupid name.

the marketeer who came up with that name was on crack, no doubt
Shoshkeles was named after the creator's middle daughter.

There are some things money can't buy -- for everything else, there's PayPal :D

Actually, most "shoshkeles" (as I now know they're called :biggrin2:) are now Flash movies that load automatically, dance around the screen, and don't have a "close" option until it's finished playing. Now, I don't mind having them off to the side, but there seem to be more of these ads that directly block the content of a page, and never provide the option for the user to close the ad. :(

It's really annoying when you were about to click on something in the content and the freaking ad pops up right before you click on it, and either a new page opens up or you get redirected to some place you weren't originally intent on going. They usually do disappear, but not for another 10 seconds after it's done playing.

Sometimes I have this impulse to disable flash...

How do you do it? I'll do it if it doesn't mean uninstalling my Flash player. I despise the intros, I rarely see Flash-based websites (and I find them annoying), and worst of all, it is responsible for "shoshkeles". Any ideas?

Yea. I wasnt annoyed with flash ads until I saw the jurassic park demo ad. Those kinds of ads annoy the hell out of me.
