Just starting to look in to this.
Going to save up and vanish for a month

Worst part is airfares, which will cost like 1500 return to most places..

Anyone had any experiences with certain countries?
I am talking about countries around Asia or India where cost of living would be seen as "cheap" for an Aussie.

I'm an Indian so here's some perspective for you.

1 AUD = 42 INR

Cost of a McDonalds Big Mac (called the "Maharaja Mac") = 65 INR.

You'll find India relatively easy on the pocket; although a lot of people do try to rip tourists off, so always haggle wherever possible. It's definitely the cheapest among the other places you've shortlisted so far.

If you're looking for specific destination(s) to visit, I wouldn't look beyond Goa, Kerala or Pondicherry.

Oh and language shouldn't really be an issue.

Is the "Maharaja Mac" a true burger or just imitation beef?

It's a burger but basically they've replaced the Beef with two Chicken patties. It doesn't taste bad at all though.
