Hey guys,

I just came up with this build for a server that I'm going to colo, what are your opinions and can you suggest any improvements if you think there can be any:

Cpu + Motherboard combo - $173.98 -

Memory - $37.99 -

Case - $49.99 -

HDD - $54.99 -

That's gonna end up costing you more in the long run.

Case isn't designed really for a server environment.

Harddrive isn't really designed for the hosting world.

Cheap memory!

If your going todo colo' make sure it's a decent spec machine or be prepared for visits to the DC to fix things quite often :)

Well, I already spoke to the DC. They do infact have space for mid towers. Isn't this more spacious than a 1U cabinet anyways ?

Also, regarding the hard drives, which hard drives do you think are made for the hosting world ? Not every server has raptors. The one I picked is the newest generation of hard drives 7200.11 which are fast and silent.

As for the memory, what do you suggest? These have decent heatsinks too.

Edit : Just found this, , think I'm gonna go with it ;)

Dude, why do you need a 430 watt power supply? You wouldn't need that much even if you are running 2 SAS drives with RAID. You'll end up paying a ridiculous price to your colo provide for electricity! 300 at max, is what you should be looking for.

HDD, CPU and MB are just fine. No need to switch from Seagate to WD. Barracudas are just fine and work well.

RAM is something I have my doubts on. Kingston, Transcend or Samsung only for RAM, please :)

Ah, well I mainly went in the PSU since it gives me scope to add more drives in the future. I wasn't sure about how much power it would consume and I didn't want to settle for one of those crappy cases which don't have proper ventilation. As for the power consumption, just because its a 430w PSU, it won't necessarily consume that much. It would only consume as much is required if I'm not wrong.

Yeah, after reading a few posts on WHT, I've noticed that WD RE's are quite failure prone so I've ordered the Seagate.

As for the RAM, OCZ is a pretty decent brand, quite popular with gamers and OC'ers so it should do well. Plus it comes with its own heatspreader.

Already purchased everything, at the time of ordering the ram was 37.99 which made it a pretty sweet deal.

It should be almost on par with the Corsair.

I think you should go with something like this instead of that ram you have chosen now because it has a better price and isn't disabled.

Your do realize that is Desktop RAM, right?
"CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail"

Lol, Desktop memory and Server memory are COMPLETELY different. Desktop memory is for burstable tasks. Server memory is only good for stable tasks, one constant ones.

Good luck with finding good datacenter for your server. I hope you will be able to find good one.

Nice offer execpt the case feel case little expensive. Why dont u purchase a branded server instead of it

I remember I once saw a 3-month old Dell PE for $300 with a higher configuration.

Branded servers are expensive because they *do* not include hard made for desktops.
Building it yourself is cheaper, because you can/will fit in a desktop component in it. :p
