Is there any use of using ZoneAlarm or other firewalls on XP?

astounding

There's many firewalls today like Norton Security or ZoneAlarm.

Many of my friends run them.

But I never see point of doing so when XP already has the firewall.

Plus the router itself has a inbuilt firewall.

So what's the use of using another one in the taskbar running 24/7?

Thanks.

Window's firewall is only inbound. While the other ones are both inbound and outbound.

It is nesesairy to get a firewall aswell if you cannot afford £60 for norton i would still put on zonealarm.

Well personally I would never recommend Norton, for the following reasons:

1) Resource Hog,
2) Hard to remove, need an special tool Norton remover, to get it completely off your system.
3) In the case an hacker gets access, Norton is the easiest and faster A/V or Firewall to have disabled.

Now with that said, zone alarm is an nice software, easy to work, however its all user preference.

Already know something better than Kerio at leaktests and better security, Agnitum OutPost Firewall Pro. For A/V, Nod32 is one of the best, well for spyware/adware your on your own. http://agnitum.com , http://nod32.com
One more thing to mention, the best free alternative of a firewall is Comodo's firewall (http://comodo.com) its really good compared to like Norton's security and other paid ones i highly suggest that if your not buying.

Zone Alarm is great. I've got an old PC w/a 500mhz Celeron D chip and 256mb of RAM and I haven't noticed a difference when Zone Alarm is running and when it isn't. I use it along side AVG Anti-Virus and Lavasoft's Adware SE. I find they make a formidable team ;)

I had trouble with ZA.

I'm now using Trend Micro. Great security suite altogether. Provides many options and good security.

I don't find any use for a software firewall. They are more trouble then they are worth.

Windows Firewall+Router is good enough for the majority of people.

I only use windows firewall.. vista, but on my XP I also used just windows.

Seemed to work fine.

ZoneAlarm on XP always had some problems for me, it blocked out images and websites and I had no control over what it was doing. Now I am just using the default Vista firewall plus my router's firewall.

I use ZoneAlarm, well not anymore as it doesn't support Vista, but it was great with XP, picked a lot of things up and helped protect my PC a lot.
