GeoCities

that's the problem. 95% of those looking for free webspace (i wouldn't call them webmasters because they haven't mastered the basics if they're using a drag-n-drop editor or templates) don't need anything other than space, and httpd. ever since geocites became part of yahoo, their growth has been exponential. that gives us hosts (yes, i am becoming a host soon, give or take a month or two :p) an unfair disadvantage

You're absolutely right. One of the few hosts who allowed CGI, virtualave.com has turned to paid hosting as they could not last remaining free. What good is it if they offer you 15 different scripting features if they fold in 6 months? It is a huge annoyance for those of use who have to move elaborate, huge websites.

they weren't bad at first. you're forgetting why they were forced to go to pay hosting. remember when ads were actually worth something? banner ads cannot provide the funds to support a host like virtualave, and it's not the features. it's the revenue. it is more tangible nowadays to provide free hosting as one of the plans along with the normal pay hosting.

Um..just because one uses a drag and drop editor doesn't mean they are not a webmaster....Some of the best sites out there are done with drag and drop...

;)

i mean ONLY drag and drop, and absolutely no know-how of how to go about a simple markup language. :p

i might be offering this:

1 MB webspace
75 MB transfer/mo.
Telnet/SSH access
PHP 4.0.6
CGI (Perl 5.0.0.6, PHP 4.0.6)
SSI
mySQL (counts as part of your webspace, so dont think about a BB ;))
~user directory
One POP3 email account
(There is going to be a very tough AUP so any people violating the rules will automatically be kicked off)

this is for serious people who have better things to do than uploading music files warez, or using up system resources for no reason.

you should really define a webmaster. ok i will

SOMEONE WHO MAINTAINS A SITE

webmasters dont 'have' to know how to code in html. its ok to use drag n drop editors, but sorry to the community of homestead users, but u's are very lazy!.

it may be more convenient and faster but 85% of homestead sites are not what you could call of 'an eye catching standard'.

with such editors such as the homestead one, the graphics are there for you.

where as you average joe designer would use an editor such as dreamweaver, homesite or frontpage to make there site. they are semi lazy. i am one of these people, (hey i cant help if im lazy) but i make an effort to design my own site graphics. (these programs listed allow you to implement your own html easily)

then you have the hardcore html'ers that use such editors such as hotdog or acehtml. i dont see the point in spending hours and hours coding a site in your own html, this can be done for you with a WYSIWYG editor.

My arument is its not about the coding issue, its about the way your site is presented with graphics!

sorry if i got off the track a little :)

this is just my opinion, but I wouldn't host my site with geocites..I don't care how long there gonna be around. You do know that they'll axe your site at any time for any reason right? That's what they did to mine and I never did get an explanation as to why they deleted it.After that I moved on to Lunarpages.com.I've had my site there for about 2 months now.The servers are fast, they provide all the tools that I need, which isn't much, and I've never had any log in problems ever.As for coding,I never have used any programs to aid me.I always use good ol notepad.Yeah it takes a while, but I need the practice...:)

Notepad's easy to edit with but it sure as hell isn't too create.

GeoCities doesnt delete accounts for no reason. Ive had inactive accounts for years hat havent even been deleted.

Hahaha! I used Notepad...and later on, CuteHTML for the past 5 years as I love to work in HTML. I used Netscape Composer a few times and found out that it mangles up the META tags. In my eyes, though I don't mind their browser (IE is faster) and mail client, I despise Composer:(

Go to http://www.evrsoft.com/ for a fabulous editor that is FREE, contains Java applets, doesn't mess up yout tags...wow! And all this for free?! CuteHTML was great, but since I found 1stPage by Evrsoft, there's no going back. I threw away FrontPage, Homesite, etc. However, I have DreamWeaver which I am starting to learn.

One word of caution before you download it. You cannot edit WYSIWYG in 1stPage. You need to work in HTML.

Well, here are the facts. They ALL axe your site for the most trivial of reasons, at any time for any reason, without warning. Take it from me, I have tried 20 or more providers in the past 3 months, and they have all deleted my RM files. So, if you compare them with Geocities, GC is far, far more tolerant of certain types of files than any other. Fortunecity is also very tolerant, but lately, not useful for me because of some logistical problems. After all is said and done, in the totality of all aspects, Geocities has been very dependable for me, though a few years ago, they lost one of my sites and had no explanation.

Right on! They do it only in extreme cases. There has to be a very serious infraction, such as warez or MP3 files, before GC deletes your files.

Now, if only the guys would start giving at least 50 MB...:(
