Will there ever be an end to free hosting?

I think all general hosts will be gone very soon. Specialized free hosts may stay around forever, like the ones that accept via forums or web site partnerships.

As long as there is pay there has to be free .... even if it's just 1 KB of space with 1 KB of tranfer and 5 popups and top and bottom banners.

Yes, I believe so... :smile2: Free hosting can't last forever, free hosts will die out because of the amount of abuse. What will be left of free hosting is specialised hosting...paid customers who are willing to host worthy customers for free... :wink2:

We've got about 15,000 free members and while I don't agree that it is going to die out - I will say that the dang abuse is without question our biggest headache.

Of all those thousands of users - it only take a couple handfuls of porn guys or mass spammers before you've crud to deal with. To other free hosts on here - is there any forum for free host owners to hang and discuss such issues?

No, I don't think so, and I don't quite agree that only specialized ones will stay. Geocities is actually quite a good host, for instance. What is going to die is hosts for what people want: ie scripting. That, I believe, is going to die hard except for the specialized ones. Then people will go back to general hosting and more companies like http://freewebs.com will appear because people will not want scripting anymore. At least, less people will want scripting for free, anyway.

Darn right! I'm on a free webspace host that doesn't support any server side scripting, yet my site doesn't really *need* it, so I don't care. That's how I can stay on free hosts - by not taking more than what my site really needs.

What abuse?? Our free host practically runs itself automatically, including getting rid of the abusers and their accounts. So why wouldnt it stay around? Of course, the free hosting is for newbies so it doesnt offer a whole lot like scripting and all that. But the automation knows who and who not to allow hotlinking to, who and how much bandwidth to allot to each account and controls it on an hourly basis, etc, etc. Heck it even determines what files are warez and deletes them. (porn pics are a different story though )

Whether or not a free host can survive or not is all in the programming to keep abuse low....NOT in what you give away. Xoom and the rest only wished they had what we have...

1kb for a few web page of HTML ? and 5 visitors limited per day ? lot of force-pop ads with banner-ads (like geocities). what for ??? better buy for paid host rather than free host.

yeah, lot of free host have been disappear from the cyberworld? so ...? so, they might dont have any of the free host, unless your college school provide host for you, or other way ....

You know, you're always welcome at the Muttle forums even if you don't have a freehost through us. The conversation other freehosts could bring would be well worth the resources used by the forum. There are plenty of people there who admin not only Muttle freehosts, but also those of their own complete control.

I think freehosting will end if most people use broadband & use their comp as web server online 24 hrs
then...the freehosting service will disappear
