Time to rebuild my host spread

Hello, Tao,

You are asking if we will purchase a signed certificate for cPanel logins? No, there are no plans of this to happen anytime ever. We'll save the hundred bucks and users can add an exception in their browser.

I do see the support ticket...is this a demand or a request?

*Cough* It's only $8.95 for a normal SSL certificate... *Cough*

Tao, I can offer you the following:

Space: 10240 MB (10 GB)
Bandwidth: 51200 MB (50 GB)
Features (mySQL, FTP, Email, etc.): 100 of each

For a 1 time post requirement of 100 posts or, for free with a link back. :)

Logan, you haven't yet read the novel of this thread. The rules are, I don't do any posts, you give me 1Gig as as the "standardization" which cuts down on overselling games, and you have to post outages when you plan downtime or something happens. It seems that about 3 config tickets show up as well during setup.

You'd be doing this as the public record of your performance, that you think you can hold an uptime more than 7 months, so I run a fairly strict event.

Free level 1 SSL certs. Good enough to get started with at least. Just make sure that you install the certificate chain properly so that it verifies automatically or it will still yield errors.

You only need the thousand-dollar ones if you want to wildcard subdomain or have one of the high level verifications that requires an in person interview with proof of identity and the like.

Hostalope also sent along this fresh reminder of their planned downtime.
Subject: Maintenance 8/12 10pm-12pm Today at 03:25
Hello,

This is just a reminder from Hostalope (previously DGCWO) that there is going to be maintenance on your server starting in less than 24 hours. We sent out the original notification about a week ago. The server is going down at 10 pm PST and may not return until 12, though we will do our best to have it up before then.

Please send any questions to support@hostalope.com. Thank you.

Thanks for the great link, Seraphim :)

Thank you Tao for placing the reminder here as well. Note that if you have a cPanel account, there is no downtime tonight, this is just for DA (Tao received the e-mail because he actually has an account on each server, and an e-mail was sent out to every e-mail address corresponding to a DA user).

Your response was, "is this a demand or a request?"

You are also proud of your new featured cPanel. I requested to be on that at which point your reply included "you do not need that".

No other host I have dealt with issues those kinds of replies in response to basic configuration tickets. If you have decided that my requests pose too much work at the free level then we can call it creative differences and dissolve our liaison which otherwise looked promising. You posted a downtime event on cue, I posted a support note behind one of your Free Host offers elsewhere, as well as several "All's Well" notes here. It would make me sad to see that happen but I cannot have my digital partner at odds with basic requests.

Sorry if we are making things difficult for you; we haven't had any other complaints like this. The fact of the matter is that due to the binding agreement that we have, your account is also treated in a special manner. We are already giving our time to make the trip to FWS to report any issues. We have also done you the favor of migrating your account for you, twice. Now you are making demands in regards to a domain that doesn't belong to you.

I understand that due to your scientific ways, your people skills may not be what the normal person would expect, and I can respect that, however that doesn't mean we do whatever you want. I do wish to continue with our relationship, however our policy stands. If this is a dealbreaker for you, kindly advise. Thank you.

Tao, I only read the first few pages, lol. So If I'm getting this, I give you a gig of hosting, and you keep check and if it lasts more than 7 months, you'd consider it reliable?

Thanks for your link! I checked it out, and I wonder if renewal of the
class 1 certificate is free as well? The validity was 1 year according
to their web page.

It's been a Lol time with this thing! But yeah, you're pretty close to the mark - in general it's the easiest test ever! The key theme is just to report downtimes and any big ticket company news.

I and the rest of FWS will "start to notice" after 3-4 months, I just picked 7 as my fun number because in the old days that was just about how long it took newbie owners to get themselves into trouble. That's the important downside if you get bored and drift off into some new direction, because then the thread clan will end up discussing it under the spotlight.

Heh you can read all my speeches if you want the philosophy!

I feel scared... xD
Cause if I even do go under, It would be the spotlight of the day! xD
I plan on being open a while but... things can go wrong, nothing is foolproof.
Do you think I should get into this thing? lol

Good! Be scared! That means you're not ready!

Okay, so now what? That's why I experimented with a new category a little while ago, "Hosts I Like". One aspect of it almost a reverse of the classic contest - "Hi! I'm a new host! I expect to close down. But when I do, it will be in a glorious blaze of fireworks, and I'll use the hot dog sales to start over! Who's with me!" So you market yourself to younger clients who are also thrashing around a bit. Or people who want to experiment. If you do rocking service, that will be your counterweight to a (likely? maybe not?) eventual jam that might take you down. (RLS is in another aspect, I expect them to be solid but they declined the reporting side to get the mainline "cert".)

I've run a host in the past, but I really wasn't smart... I offered a 750 GB account... xD
I have gotten more experienced and know better now, but I don't know.
Maybe I should be up for a few months before getting on the radar... lol

BTW, I don't really understand the second part...

Basically, you might just need a second learning experience. Hooray that you learned not to offer 750Gigs! (Giggity!) But maybe you're not going to hit a grand slam with YaFreeHost either. What I am encouraging is make that a sales point. Call it an experimental host! Try stuff! All ya gotta do to be a hero is when it goes sour, just apologize and see what you can do next. We only get upset when folks try to be the next big thing without the experience to make it stick. But if you are fine with being a slightly greenhorn host, you'll get some clients who get it, and someone might even have a tip that can fix something. Wanna try?

Yeah, I guess it is more of an experimental host. And like you said, if something goes wrong, try to make up for it, but don't do something that is too crazy. I'm not so sure if I should get into this monitoring thing yet, my last host was a real experiment, and now I'm trying to see what I did wrong then, and correct it now. So... I don't know yet.

Sure! So now everyone knows, and we won't rain coconuts on your head if you get hit with a natural disaster! Carry on!

Turnover Specialists

...I have my data on hosts who specialize on 4-7 month turnover specialists.

Anyone who wanted to know what a "Turnover Specialist" is, here's your answer.

Board Update 8-17-2011

The board moved around little today, with one departure and previous leader IsMyWebsite sliding to the back of the ladder. I sent Azoundria a note for him to post a note and see if it's "just a node" or something bigger. (IsMyWebsite used to run a multiplexed back end under the IMW wrapper, so if he didn't have any automated metrics to tell him that node was failing, he might not have noticed.) He was one of the ones who "took a gamble" at not looking at FWS for a while, so under the project rules serious outages and no report is a pretty big hit, something like #3 on the severity scale.

I also got a note that cWahi's ad rotator is a bit aggressive, and apparently even had one of those rogue AV scanners. Both the reporting member and I checked briefly, and we didn't see it for various reasons, but my quick advice is that in return for that infamous bandwidth claim of theirs, users should be more advanced to understand the ad tradeoff.

This is Seraphim's copy.
