    telnet hosts...

heh... yeah. if you are opposed to having to log in occasionally what do you need shell access for? ;) other than the systems you listed, there's m-net (m-net.arbornet.org) and nyx (nyx.net), but they aren't exactly bursting with features. just about nobody else is accepting new accounts at...

    Male vs Female debate

some people on this thread should perhaps examine statements like "i'm no misogynist, but (insert load of misogynistic bullsh** here)" for logical fallacies. i can't fathom having intimate relationships with a class of people for whom i hold such deep-seated hatred. just a thought, man.

    Please help

assuming this is a *nix server to which you have shell access (because anything else is just silly), log in and type "which perl" and that returns the path to perl. if there's more than one path returned, just choose the first one. same with "which sendmail" for the path to sendmail, etc, etc...

Get your FREE homepage for GIRLS ONLY!!

well, no. in that case it would be like, nsync and scented shaving cream ads or something. my point above was that if you wanted to enforce a "gay webmasters only" rule you could probably enforce it with gay-targeted ads. not even necessarily porn, but ... gay. the average straight webmaster...

    Hmm, Look Here!

i have no job and therefore hours and hours of free time. no, seriously, http://web.archive.org is terribly useful. type in the url of a website and it will show you archived pages from the site since about 1998. it'll display as a list of dates; you can click on a date to see what the page...

    Absolute path...

yes. see that bit o' code that bigperm has graciously supplied? copy it into a text file, upload it to your server's cgi-bin, set its permissions to 0755, and view it on the web. it will tell you what directory apache is serving your web pages from. you probably put those text files...

    Black list of hosts

agreed that mindless slander is pointless. but it would be good for newbies and such to know about hosts that have problems with extended, unexplained downtime or offer features they don't follow up on, or the mysql server is always down, etc. maybe throw it in the host faq. it's a little...

    Hmm, Look Here!

wow.... the front page of mister.net renders terribly on opera 6.0. a brief history of mister.net, brought to you by web.archive.org: - in 1998, it offered to register your domain and set up URL forwarding for a mere $250. - in 2000, it offered nebulous "e-commerce applications" and...

Get your FREE homepage for GIRLS ONLY!!

they could place pop-ups for gay phone sex lines or something. that would enforce it pretty well :)

http://www.sdf-eu.org Ownz all of you lame freespace providers!!

sdf-eu is freeshell for europeans, basically. it has the same membership model... a restricted shell for free, a not so restricted shell for a dollar, and a pimp---- shell for $36, among various other sevice levels. considering sdf has been around since 1987 and hasn't disappeared yet, i...

what can we do with freeshell?

actually it's netbsd running on a dual-cpu alpha 5305. but, yeah. it's a server for unix shell accounts. meaning that you can log in remotely via telnet or secure shell and execute various and sundry unix commands. from the page: users (free) !!! actually it's a dollar. 20mb home, 20mb...

    i need a CMS

definitely the bbs addon; the forum module included in the source code sucks. the chatbox is okay; haven't tried any others. the cvs code (which is pretty buggy at the moment) has a lot more modules, and they're pretty cool -- hopefully they'll put out a new stable version soon with the...

    i need a CMS

oh. yeah, it's a little confusing; download link for drupal 3.0.2 is on the front page: http://www.drupal.org/drupal/drupal-3.0.2.tgz everything on the download page is just add-ons and extra themes. installation is pretty standard, i guess... documentation is in the tgz file

    httpd.conf help

it's not in httpd.conf; it's in php.ini (usually in your apache configuration directory. i'm running slack 8 & mine is at /etc/apache/php.ini) open it up and search for "Safe Mode" and you'll see the variable you need to edit. pretty self-explanatory.

How do you get a php script to...

if you're using php >= 4.00 on a *nix server, you can do something like this: $upstr = shell_exec("uptime"); echo $upstr; the contents of $upstr = the output of the "uptime" command, which tells you what time it is, how long the computer's been running, how many users are on the system...

    i need a CMS

use drupal. it be the shiz. http://www.drupal.org/ a lot of the concepts were taken from scoop and slashcode, but it's lightweight and uses php/mysql. insanely customizable... the documentation kind of sucks though, so you'll have to play to figure things out. it's worth it. see an...

    SSH host, not host.sk

depends on what you need. freeshell.org supports it, ductape.net, and rootshell.be -- all of which have cgi access. they're primarily shell account providers, though, and not web hosts.

    Free Shell

try fastshell.tk; pub.dtdns.net; shells.at although (obligatory sdf plug) you'd be better off paying, because the shells above probably won't last too long. a onetime $36 donation to sdf.lonestar.org gets you 300mb space, php, perl, compilers, usenet, irc, and a private members server with...
