Defragmenting

I've got an old p3 i've started using again, but it's pretty slow so it's time to defragment. After about 5-10 minutes it stops and starts again. It's been going for 2 hours now and is only half way down the first screen. I tried doing it in safe mode a while ago, but i didn't think that worked because i couldn't open it.

Is it a safe idea to take the out the hard drive and put it in my good computer and defragment it there? Or are there any other ways to have windows running with only essential processors so i can defrag? I'd play around with msconfig but i have no idea what's what and what's needed.

cheers guys :)

O&O Defrag can't help because the OS on my old 'puter is 98 so i'll give diskeeper a try
