Do you really pay for what you get?

Just wondering if price means performance and quality or not. One host I used and switched from lasted 6 months. Another host made big claims and lasted less than a year. Both were cheap.

Then I looked at the more expensive hosts and the price was in the joke range. How do we know we get our money's worth? Who is behind the great claims? We do not really know do we?

:D

I would say that "you get what you pay for" is most often true. However, sometimes you must look at it this way. If you buy super cheap hosting...that is exactly what you will get. However, don't assume that just because you are paying $25/month (example) that you will get good support/service or a good product. However, you certainly have a better chance at getting good service paying a reasonable monthly fee.

The best chance is to pick a company that charges an amount for hosting that is reasonable and would provide a sustainable business for the hosting company and to check with previous customers to see what they have to say about your perspective host.

yeah..if you pay little per month/year then of course what u get in the host aint gonna be much..its economics..or busines... or both i am not sure but the firms always trying to make profit...

Paying $25/month should get you better support (but not always true), however, paying the extra amount should ensure your host can make the level of money they need to stay running & be full-time. The problem most hosts face is... not enough income to make it worth anything for the owner to run (as it takes up too much time and the reward is very low due to their overselling plan, that never worked out).

It's kinda hard to find "reasonable" priced web hosting when you look at these forums (FWS/WHT). There full of part-time wannabe hosts that sell packages that only seem to be part-time or run by kids.

If you want good web hosting, stay away from the discount section of host indexes. Try to avoid getting hosting from people in forums. If it seems to good to be true, then it is. Remember, real hosts have to pay support staff etc. Pay for toll-free lines and the list goes on. That's what you pay for! There is more to hosting then a dedicated server for $99/month.

How can you tell if they are reputable as you go through the list and how long they have been around?

Is monthly better way of paying so that you have not blown away a whole year's money?

Yep, as another guy said... Go monthly. Does it really matter how long they have been around for??

As to "reputable", test them. Call the toll-free number, email sales etc. If you get a good fast reply that makes sense, chances are they will be very reputable. Make sure correct (well, not fake looking) contacts are listed for the domain, simple things some people overlook then get scammed. Make sure you get a phone number that works.

If a reply to your email takes hours, then they are overloaded or just don't care and you should pass.
