:applaudin Both nice layout and idea - might be an idea to allow people to browse and search without joining though as that can limit you a bit and it'll get more custom through the site getting more interest in getting your ad's in. All in well done nice clean fast :biggrin2:
 
and maybe expand from just your city toa wider audiance and get your site to be THE site for garage sales
 
Gotta agree Wojtek - you've got a great idea for a national or even international site there shred444 :) and a great domain name to go with it (yellowpages.com ring a bell :p )

It'll take some work but could pay off very well, you might even be able to interest someone in doing the promotion. BUT there are other directories similar so think about that one.
 
hey guys, thanks for your comments. We original had browsing enabled without becoming a member. Turns out that we changed it to so we can log people's email addresses and zip codes to email them if a sale starts in their area. This option can be turned off by the user but is set as checked by default(this will help people return to the site periodically)

the domain name was chosen as garagepages.com because of yellowpages. Thought it would ring a bell.

Our first idea was to do the entire nation, but we didnt want to have only a hand ful of sales in each state...we would rather target a more dense and smaller area and have it spread through there. We decided to choose middlesex county nj, because thats where i live and where i will be returning once school starts summer break. we are getting over 11,000 UV coated color flyers printed by a printing press and will be posting these and handing them out at other businesses and such. This way, after this summer, we can find the flaws and bugs in our system.


Any other ideas?

It has a simple layout, looks pleasant to the eyes, but maybe widen the page. Looks narrow on 1024x768
 
hey sorry about the long reply. We decided to go with an 800x600 design layout because that is still the most common. We are thinking about putting google adwords on the right side of the site, so that will take up some space. Thanks..

Few suggestions:

move todays news inside the overall layout, just a personal opinion

for the search by city add the number of sales in each area beside the name like:

Avenel (0)
Carteret (4)
Colonia (2)

Otherwise looks good.
 
Maybe let traders subscribe (for a small fee :biggrin2: ) and submit their own ads :ditsy2:
