The replies to this thread haven't been really all that good
but I'll try to give you the complete rundown in plain English ...
There are two main ways to setup a domain ... either as a
redirect or as an actual domain account.
With a redirect, the address of your hosting account is
actually something very different from your domain and
could be anywhere at any hosting provider. Your domain
is simply programmed to take the visitor to or rather "redirct"
them to your real web site. There are many limitations
to using a domain merely as a redirect.
With a domain account, your domain is actually the real
address of your web hosting account and has been configured
to work with that web service. You don't have to deal with
and frames or redirects and everthing is much smoother for
your domain. However, you can only use this method on
hosting providers that actually support "domain hosting" or
in plain English meaning that they will setup your hosting
account on their service to directly make use of your domain.
Now in regard to your "transferring" question, there is actually
several meanings of that word.
One meaning refers to moving the domain from one registrar
such as Verisign to another registrar such as Go Daddy ...
THIS IS NOT NECESSARY FOR SETTING UP HOSTING.
A second meaning refers to transferring control of the domain
to someone else. People often mistakenly think of this when
thinking about setting up their hosting account. THIS ALSO
IS NOT NECESSSARY FOR SETTING UP WEB HOSTING.
The third meaning of the word "transfer" refers to simply
changing the DNS servers to your hosting provider's DNS
servers. This does not give your hosting provider any rights
or control of your domain registration. THIS IS ALL THAT
ACTUALLY NEEDS TO BE DONE TO HOST A DOMAIN ... Many
people are surprised to learn that there is actually no need
to have the hosting provider listed in any of the contacts
for the domain .... all you need is the DNS servers ... that's it!
Oh by the way, regarding your first question about finding
a host that supports FREE domain hosting. We fully support
domain hosting on FREE accounts at AMZ Web Hosting. If
you own your own domain, we can setup your hosting account
to actually use your domain. If you don't own your own
domain then we can set you up with a subdomain.
