How do you make money by providing FREE Hosting?

I would like to learn how web hosting companies make money by offering free hosting to customers.

* By placing ads on their web sites?
* Or by selling paid hosting to their customers after a certain amount of time?

well sometimes they have adds on there forums, that users post on to require free hosting, or also offer better payed plans for premium members....

Lot of methods out there.

* You can put ads in user pages
* Put ads in your forum & offer Post for Hosting.
* If you've a good Paid hosting base you can introduce your services to newcomers for free.This will eventually come fruitfull..

Get people to signup for your sponsors.

Be as honest as you can.
Try your best to make every customer aware of every issue at any given time.
Explain changes made, requirements necessary.
Stress to your resellers that they need to follow your standards and practices, (most resellers are not so anonymous anymore as the public becomes more aware)
Customers will recommend other people to you. Word of mouth advertising is the absolute best way to go.

Yes. I can't find any good providers that pay per impression. Any ideas?
