Hurricane Wilma

Robert

NLC

It's 6:43AM and my power has been out for 1.5 hrs now. We're experiencing winds up to 195mph. Our generator did not kick in when the power went out, but given the situation outside, we won't go check until later. My DSL is still up so I am able to keep updated with my laptop. We have a small 5" B/W tv that is providing us with visual information.

So far, 350,000 people without power and that's increasing at a rapid speed.

Looking outside all I can see is wind, and rain. Once in a while the sky lights up and I can see further than 10 feet.

Well back to sleep I go.

Hmmmmmm, how can you post with no power? Good luck Robert and anyone else in the Florida region.

Thanks!

My DSL is really fiber optics, so I have no modem or any hardware needed to have a connection to the Internet. So I just plugged the walljack (the datajack) into my laptop, create a PPPoE session and off I go!

Good to hear you're fine, Robert. I'm still trying to reach my relatives who live in Fort Myers (they're probably safe though).

I wish I had hurricane-proof DSL :)

Some updates...

First death has occured. A man ventured outside and was hit by a tree.

Now there are 1.3 million people without power. We're in a clam state (The eye of the hurricane is above us). For the next 3 hrs we'll endure 110mph winds and rain.

My DSL is still up. Woot!

Our neighbors roof is gone. I hope they are ok.

Well time to go watch the Gov speak.

This hurricane season is absoultely insane. I hope everything remains calm for your sake, Robert.

And, apparently, the Rock, seeing as you guys are so close :p

that hurricane was some fun stuff. maybe i'm sick but i love storms; even went outside to get pelted in the face with rain and leaves at 100+ mph (not the most pleasant thing). although i no longer have a back yard, a lovely stop sign's now in my possession . . . . thank god for that cold front, without the 50-degree weather everyone in s. florida woulda been dead. :d

You're lucky your DSL is back up. Mine is down. Heck this entire area has no power! And yea, the 50-degree weather was nice. I slept with my window open all night and then I was cold in the morning. Glad you made it thru!

Be Strong Robert!!!!
Hope this disaster pass soon and after that not much sad things happen!

im amazed my dsl is up. after katrina it didnt come back for some while; in sunset i don't think i'm very near a bellsouth building, either.

hope there's no major damage in your area. a friend of mine lost his whole house (struck me as kind of odd, as the worst damage i'm seeing are ruined roofs and fallen trees and elec. poles)

Robert, I hear ya im up in vero beach florida. Power just came back, one thing I think you might have said wrong is that you are experiencing winds up to 195mph, I doubt that fully, I think maybe 100-120mph BUT NEVER 195mph that would break a large record.

You're right. Not 195mph. I think I meant 120 (195 kph).

gusts.

some guy in key west recorded gusts of up to 210mph. and it's very well possible: translational velocity (25mph) plus rotational velocity (125mph) is already 150mph winds.. so 195mph gust is very well possible. given, you'd have to be right SE of the eye
