I want good discussion board to my site

Hello!

I'd like to have a remotely hosted (I've heard that those cgi boards eat too much resources, is it so?) discussion board to my page viewers.

I'd like it to be configurable as much as possible and as much messages as possible allowed or some kind of an archive thing. The whole board easily dowloadable or something. I haven't got any experience on these things...

thanks!

Your right some do eat up a lot of system resources. But Ikonboard from everyone tells me and knowing myself. It doesn't eat up as much as all the cgi boards out there that i have seen. I run a Ikonboard on my site and it's awesome works great and the community that comes along with it is great also best I have seen aside from UBBs community.

Anyway ...

The best boards to try are the most popular ones.
>Ulimate Bulletin Board (www.infopop.com)
>vBulletin (www.vbulletin.com) *req. PHP/mySQL*
>IkonBoard (www.ikonboard.com) *Highly Recommend*

UBB and vB both have free versions of their boards BUT their limited. Ikonboard is and always will be a free board. They promise this!:D Also it's full of features and it keeps on growing.:)

For remotly hosted boards. You can try coolboards.com, ezboards.com, and looking up on a search engine "FREE BULLETIN BOARDS" or going to a cgi directory site such as http://www.cgi-resources.com OR http://www.hotscripts.com and look under their remotely hosted section.

I hope this could help you out!

http://www.everyone.net offers BB's in addition to their e-mail services. One added benefit to their system is that you can share forums with other sites if you want added traffic.

Hoohoo!
Thanks for fast answers. The reason I'm asking this is that I tried http://www.boardhost.com board but the 300msg limit sucks. And there's something else I don't like about it.

The shared forum idea sounds good 'cause actually there's this other site that we have much in common...so a shared board would work fine.

I'm hosted at VirtualAve so I'm a bit scared will they kick me out if I use an Iconboard or some cgi board. Someone just told at FWP forum that he was kicked out 'cause of that (iconb).

I'll have to check those boards you mentioned, thanks again.

I have a friend who's had a board at VirtualAve for a couple of years, but maybe they just don't know it's there... It's not real busy.

Another one that offers shared forums is http://www.coolboard.com. Their service is kind of slow sometimes though.

The Iconboard looks great. If I just manage to install it somewhere and understand how it's done.

What would be a sure bet FWP to host it? I think it doesn't matter if the board is located at a third addres when it's a board of 2 different sites. I really don't like to get kicked out of VA.

Well I used to host a UBB on my old V.Ave account. They really didn't kick me off. IT was a busy sucker too! But I moved server so I can for sure be on the safe side.

If your board is not going to be busy you can use IkonBoard on VirtualAve. I doubt it will be deleted, but you never know. You can also use http://www.f2s.com A LOT of the Ikonboard users are using F2S.COM for their boards. Also if gcities.com allows you to you might be able to host it there ;)

Again like Ckicken always says and is branded in our heads. USE THE SEARCH ENGINE on this site for FWP with CGI.

Good Luck if you have any question on IkonBoard go to their site http://www.ikonboard.com their VERY helpful or you can email me. I have installed a lot of Ikonboards on a bunch of sites :D

I try not to 'always say it' as I know that isn't what people want to hear, but really sometimes people leave things too wide open, and if they could just narrow it down a bit themselves (and giving people a choice between A or B), and then ask for opinons ti would be easier for everyone.

If I start saying this too much you all can yell at me :)

Thank's for your advises! I read some other forums too and looks like many people have been kicked out of VA. I think i'll try f2s if they have worked on their problems for new users.

These too FWP's came out as hosting Iconboards:
http://www.netfirms.com/
http://www.staticzone.net/
Are these any good? I see that Netfirms is also for businesses only but....

I'm getting a bit tired of this, sorry. Do you suppose that I install Iconb to all the FWP's with cgi's and wait if they'll kick me out. Is there a Iconboard category at search engine: NOPE. Of course I and everybody else will ask these things in advance before installing it. It really doesn't help in the case of speed or reliability for example to know the name/cgiornot/space...

Maybe it works for someone but I'm running an information site that is needed to be up 24/7 of course I would pay for hosting if I had the money (I got a deal on a payd hosting a month ago but it was just space, no cgi or anything else so I had to stay at FWP). For my purposes VA has been great but I'm not running a business and risks to be kicked are there so I'm little scared on installing Iconb (actually I testinstalled it last night to a different account at VA using different email, bad me...). My site isn't actually a high traffic -site but it has to be available when needed. I have tried many FWP's including worldzone, geocities, tripod, f2s, exit, ovh, snoop and a couple of more that I don't remember but they are all damn slow or unreliable (they all look fine at search engine). I have lot's of photos and soon videos so I need a little bandwidth. That is why I have been asking questions about FWP's with more than 40megs space, cgi, "unlimited" traffic that is reliable and fast and FTP and a "nice" ad -policy(no replys or one). Many of the providers you recommend here are small and therefore not what I would call tested and reliable (possibly your own?).

So thank's... :) eh...I just got a little excited and carried away, did I? But don't tell me to search the engine any more, please. :) :)

If your board is popular and it consumes too much of the server's resources they you'll be booted (and this goes for paid hosting as well). Small boards won't be a problem, and as long as you know this, then you'll be fine.

Ok,

I have installed Iconboard but there's something clumsy about it...maybe too many options...the big gifs I already changed to smaller and not so shiny. I have to try it with modem connection to see how fast it loads.

I just wanted to ask what's the fastest and least resource eating of these: IkonB, UltimateBB, UltraB or vBulletin. I have no idea of these things. Homepagetools UltraB is fine but the banners so BIIG.

I got quite excited about the ones that aren't remotely hosted. They really 'fit' better to the whole site.

Cooboard site hasn't been working since Mandrake posted the URL.

Thanks! Search engines aren't very good for searcing these things, the best I found through them was Boardhost.com... Maybe I haven't got enough patience...if I need to ask something I will come here with the questions.

I am using tforum right now. I'm playing with the layout and design thats what is taking so long for me to get my site online. It's very very similar to vbulliten but free and very easy to customise.

Well resource wise for the CGI boards I would really suggest IkonBoard especially if your running on a Freewebhost. Cause most FWP don't have php or mysql. If you do have access to PHP/mySQL I suggest phpbb.com even though it's still under development and seems kinda buggy but it looks like it could be a very good board in time.

So the 2 I would suggest is IkonBoard and phpBB. IF you are having problems with IkonBoard your welcome to ask me anything about it. I have customized my board heavly and I am currently working on another ikonboard doing the same. Same with UBB even though they don't allow you to customize your board unles you have a old version of UBB which doesn't have their new policy... which hehe lucky me i still have :p

Eddie, what is the URL for tforum? And is it php/mySQL, easy to set up, yadda yadda?

yeah easy to setup just put the files in the directory run the createdb script and its up and running. Looks ab bit rough but with some work can looks almost as good as vbulletin.

I've been using Ikonboard for a week now. It's great! Easy to install and sooo many features. I hacked the html quite a lot (all I can since Perl is like Taiwanese to me).

check their site if you haven't:
http://www.ikondiscussion.com/ikonboard/

Just upgraded from 2.1.6. to 2.1.7. and all the bugs I found on the last version are absent.

I really recommend this one.
