unless it's ok with your isp to run a server, they can shut you down. they're real nice about it too.. (sarcasm) I've gotten shut down once for being online with dialup too long. I paid for unlimited access. that includes 99% of a month

if you're serious about having your own server, get it co-located in a real datacenter. if not, start out with a reseller account or something.

Colo would be the answer, but I've seen colo prices for most providers are so very close to those of a dedicated server you might as well just get the dedicated server.
