Has anyone been receiving these lately?

I'm receiving more and more of these spam through the Internet, the pop-up consoles by Messenger Service... most of them are crappy advertising whilst others are porn advertisements.

Must install a firewall. :biggrin2:

Yup, it's been a while since I got one, but I went for a couple of weeks where I'd get one about every three days.

It's installed under 'messanger' dir in program files.
One could suppose this is what people are talking about

From this..http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/techinfo/administration/rtcfaq/default.asp

Windows Messenger is a new rich, integrated real-time communications experience in Windows XP that enables people to effortlessly see, talk, work and play with friends, family and colleagues, whenever and however they choose using their PC. Windows Messenger also includes presence and notification features to keep you updated when your contacts are online and let you know their current status.

Windows Messenger IS [Windows] Messenger Service.

It's certainly not new in XP though.

no it's not.
The "Messenger" service is normally used for a LAN/Intranet to send messages to a specific computer name/IP and uses NetBIOS to transmit its data between computers. You'd use a "net send computername/IP your message goes here" to send one. It's been around for years and years now. It's not meant for chats but for announcements like: "everyone save your work within 15 minutes. Server going down for maintenance" on a LAN.

Windows Messenger is what people generally assume of what a messenger is, namely an IM client where you add people to a contact list and send them instant messages and have full grown chats.

When IM got popular it just got refered to as "messaging" and IM software as "messenger" which overlapped with the "Messenger" service on WinNT's and causes people headaches in trying and figure out which one is which now :)

(Edited to add that Microsoft certainly didn't help things along when they called their IM client in XP Windows Messenger)
