mysql problem

when i try to connect to my mysql, terminal gives me this error:
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql .sock' (111)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' ex ists!

i checked in the /var/lib/mysql/ directory and realized that mysql.sock dosnt exist but in the handbook "redhat linux 8 unleashed" it said that mysql.sock should be in that dir:(.anyone know why this is happening?

hmmmm.... just a long shot but did you install mysql manualy or from the screen when you first install Red Hat Linux?
