Need a VPS, requirements?

Once you sign up for a reliable web host for your website, you gain immediate access to any of the tools and features, and start building your web pages within minutes!

Look at your current usage and double it at least, triple is even better because coming half way through the month and running out of bandwidth is probable the worst thing you can do for your website, your users will probable desert you, if they see it isn’t online for a day or two.

I think I have outgrown shared hosting at Dreamhost, who I might add have been pretty good over the years.

This is what I currently host at Dreamhost and possibly someone can tell me approx. what I would need in a VPS.

Domains Hosted:
21 plus 2 subdomains

Email addresses:
50+

MySQL Databases:
11

Applications in use:
WordPress
Online Invoicing System 3.0
PHPlist (Never more than 800 emails per month/sending)
Machform (Contact form)

I don't tend to use massive amounts of bandwidth a month. Here are my latest stats:

3.87GB in the last month.
25.64GB the last 6 months.
89.12GB the last year.

So how much memory would I need (even burstable), and what would be a good host to go with?

Thanks in advance..
Based on your current usage and applications, a VPS with at least 2GB of memory should be sufficient. Look for a host that offers scalable resources, good customer support, and a reliable network.

If you’re planning to get a VPS, here’s what you should check before buying:

1️⃣ Decide your purpose – hosting websites, trading, gaming, or running software.
2️⃣ Choose OS type – Windows or Linux, depending on your needs.
3️⃣ Check specs – CPU cores, RAM, SSD storage, and bandwidth.
4️⃣ Location matters – pick a nearby server for better speed and low latency.
5️⃣ Support & uptime – look for 24/7 support and at least 99.9% uptime.

I personally use RDPExtra — it’s affordable, fast, and reliable for multiple VPS use cases.

When you dig deeper into each web hosting provider’s pricing model, you’ll notice that they will entice you with attractive pricing for new signups. However, this is typically only for those willing to sign up for more extended contracts. Once that expires, prices increase significantly for renewal. Make sure you factor in the renewal rates as part of your long-term business plans. The increased prices will likely impact your budget for digital services.

Good point — many hosts lure you with low intro rates tied to long-term contracts, then raise renewal prices. To plan sustainably: 1) Compare both intro and renewal fees over 2–3 years. 2) Prefer monthly or short-term plans if you expect change. 3) Check hidden fees (backups, SSL, migrations). 4) Budget for predictable renewals and scale costs as traffic grows. 5) Read cancellation and refund policies. Following these steps keeps your digital budget stable. I use resources at RDPextra: https://rdpextra.com for comparisons and renewal tips. Set a reminder before renewal.
