Question regarding my domain name.

I know some sites you have to type in say domain.com/page1.php to get to the page, but on other sites, you just need to type in domain.com/page1

I am wondering what I need to do, so visitors only need to type in domain.com/page1 to get to a specific page, instead of typing in the page extenstion .php etc.

if you use cms I think there's modules can do that .. for example you can do this with joomla using acesef component

I suppose you can use URL forwarding tool.

Put page1.php in a folder called page1 but call page1.php index.php is one way, the other is mod_rewrite.

If you are using Apache server, I think it can be done through the configuration file. It can be configured either index.html, index.htm, index.php, home.html, or may be home or page 1 as the home page.

Or using your CP you can install all forwarders and redirects you wish.
