Not always entirely true. I have a friend that is webmaster of http://the-scholars.com and his DB is around 400mb in size. Granted he has in the vicinity of 200K posts. Least this is what I was told.
Ok, so a little over. But no where near 5GB!
That was just the Database, Counting avatars, files, random mods. But Its not close to 5GB probably... 2GB
I used to own a forum with the following:

And the database was not greater than 300MB, and the diskusage (Including Uploaded files, and avatars) was not greater than 500MB.
If a forum gets to 2GB, something is VERY wrong.
