Why do Verisign, Register.com and DirectNic charge so high prices??

Because they can.

They focus on new users who have no idea what the cost of a new domain runs for now-a-days.

Nothing wrong with charging more.

They also have a lot of long time costumers who happily pay the higher fees. Few of those have changed to a cheaper registrar when they became available and cheaper.

I guess they have calculated that they will earn more money by keeping their prices higher due to all the long time costumers. But they have been forced to lower prices during the last couple of years. They lower it to a level where customers don't bother to change to another cheaper registrar and new users find the fees acceptable (atleast if they don't compare with all the competitors).

I think its more a sign of 'prestige' to have a domain with register.com

same for cars.
honda and jaguar :)

I disagree. Honda is cheaper because there's not as much extra stuff as in a jaguar. Part of it is prestige yeah but not all. If you get a honda prelude with leather and compare it to a jaguar with leather, part of it is prestige (honda's don't use the same kind of leather jaguar uses) but it's still leather, it's still better than vinyl.

There is no prestige.

If there was prestige then the customer who is aware of both Godaddy and Register.com would choose register.com. However, in this situation the customer always chooses Godaddy.com Its an awareness issue.
