wifi problems

I am connected to a wireless router. Very often, my computer will still say it is connected to the router, and the icons in the system tray will still be there. But my browsers and other programs will say they cannot access the Internet. If I turn of the wireless on my notebook and turn it back on, it will work again.

Windows XP SP2 512MB 1.5Ghz
sometimes it will also be saying that it is obtaining an IP address for a very long time, even though my browsers will already work during that time

if you use a wireless home phone the router will not work correctly

I don't think that is the case...even if both devices are of the same frequency they do prevent each other from working.

It seems that maybe the problem is with your router. I think it likes to freeze itself...so the best way to try and fix this problem would be trying to upgrade the firmware of your router.

Another problem could be the fact that windows xp comes with its own wireless management software which tends to interfere with the wireless card's own software. In this case I recommend turning off one of the 2 softwares so...only either allow windows xp's built in software to run your wireless card or use the one that came with your wireless card and disable the window xp one.

Hope this helps. If not you can contact me personally for more details.

Your best bet would be to start by just starting over...always the best thing to do with anything that works in Windows. Just completeley re-install the router on your computer. One other possiblility might be that there is a good case of Adware/Spyware/Virus causing these problems to occur. Make sure you try either or all of Lavasoft AdAware, Spyblocker, and Microsoft Anti-Spyware. You should also scan for viruses if you do not a Anti-Virus (WHICH IS INSANLY STUPID, fyi) you can use a Virus Scanner at www.symantec.com or www.ca.com (both are great and if you need some software get it from one of them too both good companies)

linksys wrt54g
sony viao z1r/p

i'm in the next room, signal strength says strong.
no phones etc.

Anti-Virus clean
no wireless card's own software afaik

The WRT54G is known to cause the problems you are experiencing. When transferring data, it will cause the router to freeze or reboot, causing the wireless (and wired) devices to lose internet access.

I experience the same issue and this is a known issue. Linksys has stated that the lastest firemware (4.x.x) fixes this issue, but it hasn't fixed mine and I'm working on my 2nd replacement with Linksys.

Look underneath your router and see what Model it is. If it's version 1, then you can't upgrade the firmware. If it's version 2 or 3, then you should be able to upgrade the firmware.

Perhaps DHCP is not working. In that case you will have to assign yourself an IP address manually.

Yeah, the way I fix it is I just unplug the router and plug it back in. I also have the same one you have.

Exactly the case, I went out and bought a new 5GHZ Phone and also a 900mhz phone for backup.... and now the Linksys is good to go... I did have a close neighbor's Cordless Phone interfere as well, but I moved the location of the router in the house and also changed from Channel 11 to Channel 10.
