For general internet use (purchase domains, webspace, cd's, porn etc...) is a standard credit card at my local bank enough or do I really need a visa/american express card?

I think it is enough if your credit card that issued by your local bank support visa or mastercard.

No, it has to be one that they have in the dropdown box. I accidentally typed in the numbers from a common Australian credit card once, in the field for Mastercard and it said invalid number. I double checked all the numbers and they were all correct. It was then I realised I used the wrong card

What are you calling a "standard credit card"?

Is it backed by MasterCard/Visa?

If not, you may as well forget about it being widely accepted on the internet.

And forget about that American Express for at least another couple years (they're picky about who they give cards to). Sure is a shame I have stock with them.

Most placea accept either mastercard or visa.

Yes, stick with Mastercard or Visa. Your local bank will probably give you one of the two.
