Hosting for message board

Hi,

Just a heads up, I am a little technically challenged.

I need a hosting company that has a message board. I want it to have it's own domain name. My hosting company for my personal site does not have the capabilities to have a forum. I did try one of those remotely hosted boards but my hosting company was not able to set up a "mirror site" for it, so I could use own domain name.

Does anyone have any experience with a good hosting company?

Almost all the hosts here at FWS allow message board hosting, aslong as they have mysql and php. I suggest you post your specific requirements such as disk space and bandwidth so that hosts may help you.

As Yellowmc said, all hosts offering PHP and MySQL will allow you to install message board scripts. However, if you are not comfortable with doing a manual install, look for a host with Fantastic - an auto installer which includes several message board scripts to get you started.

Message boards are almost a sure-have for all paid accounts since most packages have php and mysql.

If you would post your requirements here, hosts would be in a better position to offer you their best and suitable plans.

I will try and figure out exactly what I want. I guess the short answer is everything they offer at proboards.com I had originally looked into a remote hosted place but didn't want advertising and want own domain name, not one of those really long ones. Is that called subdomain? It is just hard to go with a new host when I have had such great customer service with my personal website.

Thank you I will start working on a list.

<sigh>
Im going to go ahead and respond here but Im not too happy with the way some hosts have responded to this post, BUT, be sure when you compile a list to send them some pre-sales questions before signing up anywhere!!
The host will need to support php, MySQL which is a pretty common feature but you should ask anyway.
ALSO, there are options other than the cpanel host (cpanel is just the name of their control panel)
Auto script installs might be preferred by you, BUT keep in mind that forums can be installed in about 10 minutes ANYWAY...so there ya have it!
Best of luck :classic2:

<<Mod Edit: "Does anyone have any experience with a good hosting company?" is NOT a request for offers.>>

A directory: host.com/site
Sub domain: site.host.com
Domain: site.com

Hopefully that answers your question. Just make sure you do lots of research before selecting a host. The key things to consider:

1) How long the host has been in business. If it is less than a year there is a high risk of them disappearing.
2) Does the host offer support options that meet your requirements. If you need 24/7/365 live support then look for a host that offers it (and test it with a sales question), if ticket or forum support would cover your needs then don't pay the extra for 24/7 phone support etc.
3) Don't base your decision on price alone. Factor in long term stability, proven uptime and how much load is on each of the hosts servers (ie. no. of sites/size of sites vs. the server's specs). Ask the hosts you are considering these questions and also ask for a sample file to download to get an idea of download speeds. :)

Thank you for your response. I have been doing research for about two months now. I can't believe how many hosting companies are out there!

their are plenty out there, some better than others but realistically it is almost impossible to see how they are without actually giving it a try. I would start with some presale questions and go from there, you can get a good feel from a company by the way they handle themselves during presales.

jodohost.com
cartikahosting.com

both of those I would consider top shelf hosting. good people, good companies, very well respected in the hosting community.

as far as space and transfer requirements it is hard to judge when you have never had to monitor it. Do you recall how many users were online at once time, how many posts were made? that type of information would help determine transfer better. As far as storage is concerned you probably will not need much unless you decide to have a "file library" or some other type of storage space. Generally even a larger sized forum will be well under 500mb

good luck in your search
