Well, they both count as links, so I think they'll do the same thing for your PR. But buttons typically get noticed more.

I prefer links for SEO (obviously) but if I am just paying a monthly rate to get some short term traffic I will go with the button ad.

because if you have a lot of good text links coming in for "purple widgets" you have a better chance at good SE ranks

Well you can put "purple widgets" in alt text

I'd go with text links, because it's like someones linking to a resource instead of a link partner.
