A New free host, poor speeds and downtime is an issue, but a new host

hehe

:classic2: I don't have any more time for sweet talk this evening.
I have to get out of this house to meet my candy doll Cameron before she thinks I've stood her up.

I shall return *vanishes in a thick, grey cloud* ~cough cough~

IMO, domains are pretty important for companies. Who'd want somebody to remember their big corporation website address as something like http://www.geocities.com/Rainforest/Hills/9999/?! Of course, they don't do that anymore, now it goes http://www.geocities.com/mybigcompany. Still, it just looks sooo unprofessional, it gives some people a bad image of your company. I mean, heck, I'd think that you can't even afford a real domain and some real hosting. I don't know, but I wouldn't even want to learn anything about a company that's like that. Know what I mean? Sure, your business might be a real success with http://companyname.cjb.net, but it's just so un-company-ish. Like, imagine typing "http://google.cjb.net".

zippity doo dah

That's pretty much the same as judging someone by appearence and I think it is pretty rank.

If a company is willing to host a high traffic website for free, and another is willing to provide anyone with a neat, short url, without cutting into the profits of my company, I'll take it.
It's that simple.

I live in Canada, and my first thoughts were of running my own server. I have the cash and the resources. Many people were also willing to lend a hand in keeping things running.
But, than I realized that certain tasks would take time away from my artwork. In the end my products would have suffered.
So that all ended right there.

The host I use, is used by many Canadian artists, bands and companies as their official website. They coud care less about the one pop-up that appears on your index pages.

We're talking major labels , using a free host.

Come to think of it, haven't you noticed that many major movies are now using alloy.com as their website host?
Would you think any less of a great film because the url of its website is greatmovie.alloy.com instead of greatmovie.com ?

No. That would be frigginstupid.com

Besides, the hosting company I use is also very stable and their rare popups are just ads for their own free services.
They've been around a very long time and I trust them with my webspace. The only drawback for some people is that they are a french company. Luckily I speak french and they have no rules about keepingyour content in the french language.
If something goes wrong, I will move to my own server as planned before.
I am only with them because they gave me a free offer that I couldn't refuse.
Like an all-you-can-eat buffet in cyber resources just for me. :santa:

I think I will keep my cjb.net and drop all plans to get the domain name just to protest the snoobyness of this whole "dotcom or die" bull dookie.

Well. I think this topic had something to do with a free host at one time or another. I don't have anymore time to piss people off today. I hope I made a few cjb.neters smile I won't be around to cat fight until next tuesday.
It's off to an exhibition. :book:

:madchrist Christmas in August ! Hot diggity!

So you wouldn't even pay 10 bucks a year for a real domain? Okay, it's up to you.

For the average people, more of them tend to remember yourname.com better than yourname.redirection.service. And if they heard of your company name and wants to find your site, they'd most likely try amazon.com instead of amazon.cjb.net.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with .cjb.net URLs..... I'm just saying that it'd be better to have a real domain instead of a redirection.

I think having a domain makes you look professional. Is it needed to run a succesful buisness? no, but it will not hurt you to spend 10 bucks a year....hopefully the average company CAN do that

i got bored

I would just like to bring this information to your attention.
Name: dt122n7d.tampabay.rr.com
Address: 24.92.187.125

He is infact running off roadrunner and not a T-1 like he said.

Will

LoL, I was waiting for someone to check that.

I am using Road Runner, for my home connection, now in ORDER for security, I link the DNS2Go domain to my road runner account, the Road runner account has a CLOAKED forwarding to the T-1 line. That way the IP address to the real T-1 line is hidden.

HAHA

whatever you say!

traceroute to 24.92.187.125 (24.92.187.125), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets 1 * * * 2 * * * 3 * * * 4 * * * 5 acr1-loopback.Atlantaald.cw.net (208.172.66.61) 72.261 ms 6 serviceco-llc.Atlantaald.cw.net (208.172.67.130) 89.838 ms 7 gsrb-srp60.tampabay.rr.com (65.32.8.226) 93.744 ms 8 TPA-T13-UBR-A-ATM-2-933.tampabay.rr.com (65.32.10.109) 93.744 ms 9 * * *10 dt122n7d.tampabay.rr.com (24.92.187.125) 204.089 ms

it stops at ur ip, it seems once again, it is hosted on a roadrunner line.

Just admit it!!!!

Yes I know that!

a TRACEROUTE will not reveal the real IP address!

For the second time, the ROAD RUNNER line helps mask the REAL ip address. When you traceroute to zacknetwork.dns2go.com you will not Get the REAL ip! Road Runner forwards the request to the real IP.

It's for security only!

why exactly would Zack lie about this? I think he's telling the truth here, but your welcome to believe whatever, im still a newbie to this forum :D

i wouldnt really care to type in something like google.cjb.net , its short and simple to remeber, plus its only one letter short of a .com.au domain to what the hell is the different, as long as i find wat im looking for at google

People would think that you company can't even afford a real domain. Your company wouldn't seem as businesslike to them if you don't have a real domain.

Think about it this way. A pay host offering hosting with a domain like http://iamapayhost.cjb.net Would you really trust a pay host like that? Personally, I wouldn't.

its called "bugetting". if you are a real good network admin, and u have all qualifications to manage a hosting network then you can sure pull it off if your services are A ok. but why would a pay host have a subdomain redirect? thats just stupid, but for a free host its ok.

its not just free web hosts, non profit organizations too. because if your providing services for free why would you want to spend $10 us on a domain name??

and another thing, free subdomain services are there to be used, not abandoned, some1 has to use em

And that someone would be all the people with personal webpages.

excuse me, but up till recently i used a .cjb.net address for my site. i do not class my site as personal, i class it as a non profit organization thankyou very much

Exactly!! Subdomains are fine with personal websites, but they're too un-business-ish for companies/corporations etc. Why wouldn't they want to spend 10 bucks a year for a domain name? Is it so hard for a company to cough up enough cash for a real domain?! NO.

because if your providing services for free why would you want to spend $10 us on a domain name??
Right..... so why does cjb.net have a domain name?! Why does GeoCities have a domain name? Why does freewebspace.net have a domain name?!!!? (It used to be so hard to remember... http://fill-in-the-blank.com/some-folder/folder) Why do all these places offering free services have a domain name?????

what do geocities, freewebspace.net and cjb.net have in common??? THEY ARE AD SPONSERED!!! not everyone is of legal age to gain revenue from there site.

a .cjb.net subdomain looks just as attractive as a .com.au domain dont tell me everyone is too lazy to remember the xtra letter on the end.
