wanna find a better host than gator for me with ssh shell

Hello,

I've been on hostgator for about a year now, i think it's the baby crock account. I will admit that they are pretty quick to respond to me through their email and or chat. However I am an experienced unix user and have had many difficulties with shell access. After not being able to login to the server through the shell for the 6th time, I'm fed up and want to find a host that suits my needs.

The whole process of getting shell access through host gator was a hassle I had to send emails and call people and ask the admins to give me access even though it's advertised as part of the package. And for some reason, every month or so I have to email or message them to reenable it. Can somebody recommend a host with ssh access where I will not have this problem, but have similar features such as mysql, support for multiple domains, responsive tech support, and a fairly large file and transfer quota for relatively little dough?

Hello discord,
One thing you have to understand is the technical aspects behind the ssh access. Jail shell is enabled through whm or root shell. On a reseller level, ssh can easily be disabled by changing your custom package in whm and you do not have access to grant ssh. On shared hosting, ssh will rarely be disabled. However, other things can come into play such as firewall blockage. Whenever you see the message "Shell access is not enabled for your account", that is how you know it is truly disabled on the server for your account. You should check with them for any special limits they have. Recently, I believe they disabled due to an exploit. This should be standard procedure to avoid a security breach.

I would recommend just toughing it out with Hostgator as good support and servers are hard to come by, especially with having ssh available at all.

That is true. HostGator has new procedures to enable SSH access for customers. This was put in place after the exploit was discovered. I would recommend toughing it out with them as well. Ask their support about the SSH issue to see if they can clarify it for you.

I would recommend you place all of your requirements in the request section and I believe sonnyou will have several direct offers to review

Liquidweb is a good alternative even though I am not exactly sure about their policy regarding shell access.

The only thing which is a bit difficult to find is the SSH thing. All the other requirements are pretty normal. As others stated due to possible exploits most of the providers gives even jail shell after some procedures.

That might be not a problem at all as some web hosting providers can give this opportunity to the trusted customers only

It's normal to be asked for identification verification such as an upload of your photo ID if you need SSH access.

I would say that offering/using Shell Access in Shared environment is not natural. I mean that web hosts should charge for this, even they don't. But my question to you is why don't you get a low cost VPS. You said that you are experienced unix user. So if you websites pays the costs, it is more reasonable to host it in customized web hosting environment.

I suppose that will be given for free, but you will need to do your best to get tag "trusted" with your web hosting provider to start asking for that

I completely agree. If SSH access is needed then the best thing to do is look out for a low cost Virtual Server Provider. If you are good with Linux then you can manage it on your own. Alternately, if you want the provider to do it then you can see if they can topup your virtual server plan with server management plan including monitoring.

There are many providers around who can get this for you.

I agree on the trusted part. i have a couple of customers that i have 100% trust with that i allow to use ssh. They take care of me and I take care of them. ssh is NEVER a good idea on a shared server and should never be given to anyone who is a novice; however setting up a production server that has the security level of fort knox isnt a bad idea if you plan on offering it. HostGator gets their servers from "The Planet" one of the best providers of servers out there and if they are having issues, this should sound out to the smaller guys..."ITS NOT A GOOD IDEA!" shell in the wrong hands is just a dangerous as root. this is just my personal opinion.

as some1 looking for a good paid host, i think it would be very useful to me, and i dont doubt to many others too, if you made a ranking of the best hosts according to peoples reviews. maybe this thread should become a poll?

very old post, but there are a lot of web hosts out there that offer SSH access, and should be able to deliver it, in an uncomplicated fashion.

For the record, we offer SSH to our shared web host clients :).
